There are three ways that your home’s windows can get cracked. CHC Glass & Mirror is going to list these ways below so you know what to avoid to extend the life of your windows. If your windows are old and worn, it’s likely time to replace them, especially if you have single-pane windows. These windows do not do as good a job of keeping the outdoor temperature and noise out of your home. Consider upgrading to dual-pane windows for better insulation and sound protection. Dual-pane windows are also sturdier. In other words, they won’t be cracked easily by the following things.
Temperature Stress Crack
Stress cracks are common if you live in an extreme climate. We do not have extreme temperatures here in Duluth, Georgia. A stress crack is caused by a large difference between the temperatures indoors and outdoors. For example, assume for the moment that you live in Fargo, North Dakota and the temperature outside is well below zero but you have your heater set at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. This can cause the window pane to expand and contract and develop a small crack. As with a ding in your car’s windshield, the crack will spread across the glass and form a larger crack.
Pressure Cracks
We mentioned above that dual-pane windows are sturdier, but they are susceptible to pressure cracks. Unfortunately, insulated gas windows are also susceptible to pressure cracks. This type of crack is quite uncommon, so chances are, you may never experience a pressure crack on your windows. Elevation can cause pressure cracks. If you live at an extremely high elevation or an extremely low elevation, the risk of your windows developing pressure cracks is higher. A high-pressure weather system can also cause pressure cracks. These cracks look as if someone etched a figure eight in your window.
Impact Cracks
Finally, your windows may crack if something hits them. For example, if you fling a rock into the air while you are using your weed whacker, you could crack your window. A hailstorm can crack your window. The kids’ baseball game can crack your window. Any time something hits your home’s windows with force, they are at an extremely high risk of cracking. As such, it is crucial that you are careful around the windows, especially when you are doing things that can damage them such as playing a baseball game or whacking the weeds out of your yard.
