Can A Cracked House Window Be Repaired?

A cracked house window can happen for a number of reasons, from a flyaway baseball to weather changes. If you have a cracked window, you could be losing potentially quite a lot of money in energy costs. In addition, a cracked window can get worse over time, and you’ll eventually need to get it completely replaced. In the meantime, can a cracked house window be repaired and if so, how do you do it?

Use Tape

It may seem a bit silly, but tape is certainly an option for a temporary fix. You can apply the tape directly to the crack, but be sure you do so on both sides to help keep the glass intact. Always use a longer piece of tape than the crack itself to ensure that it’s thoroughly covered. The type of tape you choose is up to you, but clear packing tape is recommended since it looks much more pleasant than duct tape or masking tape. Clear tape will also adhere really well to the glass. Clean the glass before you apply the tape to ensure that it sticks, and then press slowly but firmly until you’ve covered both sides of the crack.

Try a Glass Adhesive Product

Most adhesives for cracked glass are geared toward automotive glass, but you can use it for your house window, too. This material is made to flow into any small or large cracks and hold it together until you can replace it. Keep in mind that these products are only designed to last for a limited amount of time, so it’s also just a quick, short term solution. Clean the crack and remove all dirt, then read the instructions thoroughly for best application.

Cover it with Something

Depending on the severity of the cracked window, you may need to completely cover it with something to prevent air from getting inside your home. In cases where you can’t get a replacement window quickly, you can add thick plastic sheeting over the window frame. Just make sure that whatever you use, it’s completely attached or else it can easily fall or blow off. You can attempt to remove the glass, but it’s not recommended since you run the risk of getting injured.

When it comes to a cracked house window, yes, you can repair it, but a full replacement is always recommended. Remember that these quick solutions are made to be a short-term fix until you can get the window replaced.
